If you're down in Durban and you're not there to surf, then you must be there for the rugby. Whilst the Sharks are the obvious draw card, boasting the number of Boks that they do, the club rugby scene is just as vibrant. After enduring a tough few years at the hands of the pandemic, club rugby makes a welcomed full season return in 2022 and few are more prepared than Varsity College Rugby Club.
After consolidating Glenwood Old Boys and the DHS Old Boys rugby clubs respectively the side became known as 'Old Boys'. They took up their base at the Varsity College Campus in Durban North, where they have 3 senior men's teams, an U20 side and a Ladies side too. So as I've already said, if surfing isn't your thing, then surely rugby must be... check them out if your looking at getting back out on the sports field.
The last full club season came in 2019, before the pandemic where Old Boy's 1st xv came in at 4th place, whilst their 2nd and U20 sides were crowned champions, keeping a long and proud tradition going in KZN's club rugby scene. Being as close to the Shark tank as they are, the players are exposed to coaching from experienced coaches as well as frequent visits and assistance from the Sharks players.
Who wouldn't want to throw on their boots, make some mates and have a lekker beer afterwards at fines. As if that weren't enough, you may even get the chance to step a Springbok during warm up touchies or take some scrum advice from the Ox or the Tank from time to time.
Get in touch with the side if you're keen to link up, they are open to both students and non-students, proving yet again that rugby is a game for everyone.
